The Project:

During the 2016 and 2017 ice-free seasons, Foss completed a major sealift to an oilfield development project on remote Sakhalin Island off the coast of eastern Russia – including delivery of the largest land-based drill rig in the world. Traveling more than 240,000 nautical miles, the project included multiple tows from Texas and South Korea. Fifteen barges, 15 ocean-going tugs, and six shallow-draft tugs safely and successfully delivered 39 modules weighing as much as 2,600 tons.

Services Provided:

  • International Project Cargo Transportation
  • Oil Field Services
  • Project Management and Logistics
  • Ocean Towing
  • Naval Architecture and Engineering

Highlights:

  • Land-based drill rig deconstructs into 14 modules for transportation from Brownsville, Texas, to Sakhalin Island, requiring five tug and barge sets.
  • Delivered 10 piperacks and 15 processing modules from Ulsan, South Korea.
  • Provided bathymetric surveying and placed navigation buoys and mooring anchors to account for ice coverage and changing navigable channels.
  • On-site teams provided engineering and naval architecture solutions, ballasting, stevedores, and local interface in Brownsville, Ulsan and Odoptu.
  • A dedicated project management team assisted in permitting and local compliance and managed local labor.

The Project:

The Arctic Class Tug Denise Foss transported the drilling rig, Innovation, from Vancouver, WA, to Point Oliktok on the North Slope of Alaska. Traversing through challenging conditions, the vessel crews regularly consulted ice flight reconnaissance pilots and reviewed satellite weather data during the 2,300 nautical mile voyage. The crew successfully delivered the rig on time, and during the ice-free window for safe offloading conditions. Foss provided turnkey, port-to-port services, from loadout to offloading of the rig modules.

Services Provided:

  • Marine Transportation
  • Project Management
  • Project Cargo & Logistics
  • Ocean Towing
  • Naval Architecture

Highlights:

  • The sealift of the Innovation was segmented into five phases that included developing technical procedures and planning load out in Vancouver, towing to the North Slope, offload at Oliktok and demobilization and restoration of equipment.
  • Foss developed detailed technical plans for all stages, including: mooring, ballast and stow, stability assessments, and more.
  • The rig consists of a 500 kip telescoping mast, ‘box on box’ substructure, dual moving system, and 21 individual modules. In total, the structural weight is near 1.5 million pounds.

Historic Final Voyage https://www.foss.com/projects/historic-final-voyage/ Thu, 21 May 2015 16:40:36 +0000 https://foss.com/?post_type=projects&p=4099 In 2014, Foss escorted the USS Constellation aircraft carrier on her historic final voyage. The Kitty Hawk-class supercarrier, nicknamed “Connie” by her crew, was successfully towed by ocean tug Corbin Foss from Bremerton Naval Shipyard to Brownsville, Texas to be retired and scrapped. The 16,000-mile journey took 160 days, with Foss guiding the massive vessel along Mexico and Central and South America, passing through the Straits of Magellan before heading north to Texas.

  • Tug Lindsey Foss escorted the Connie from the Bremerton Naval Base to Blake Island where they handed the tow to the Corbin Foss
  • Completed the 16,000-mile journey in 160 days despite encountering gale force winds and massive seas
  • Orchestrated a global operations effort for fueling, pilots, assist tugs, and supplies in seven countries
  • Worked in a collaborative effort with a second tug company that assisted during the Pacific, South American portion of the tow

The Project:

Foss Maritime’s ITB the Strong/Mariner transported two land-based self-moveable drill rigs measuring 11,022 cubic meters each, from Shanghai, China to a man made island 50 miles off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The shallow draft and RORO/LOLO capabilities of the vessel enabled direct delivery of the entire drill rig (per delivery) to the island. Foss provided project management including loading and discharging at the port with limited infrastructure. Foss’ ability to deliver directly to the island and to overcome the restrictive quay design eliminated the customer’s need to transship sensitive cargoes.

Services Provided:

  • International Project Cargo Transportation
  • Terminal Services
  • Cargo Tracking and Logistics
  • Project Management

Highlights:

  • The multi-deck, shallow draft ITB Strong/Mariner’s design, which includes two side ramps, bow ramp, and a 50-ton-capacity crane on its starboard side, makes it ideal for conducting cargo operations in underdeveloped ports
  • Each land-based self-moveable rig consisted of a drill structure/mast, a power unit, and a mud unit module
  • Route included traversing known pirate zones, and vessel security was hired to protect the sensitive cargoes
  • Provided full logistical management including a capacity simulation tool for UZ750 Logistics team and proper packaging of cargoes for ocean transport

The Project:

Safely transported six huge coke drums from the Port of Los Angeles on an approximately 28-mile voyage to King Harbor in Redondo Beach for installation at Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery. Foss collaborated with heavy-lift company Mammoet USA, utilizing a detailed ballasting plan to keep the barge level during operations, which required the placement of ramps to load and unload. Self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) moved the cylinders from the barge moored at a levee in a yacht marina to a staging site near the final destination of the drums at the refinery.

Services Provided:

  • Oil Field Services
  • Domestic Project Cargo Transportation
  • Regional Towing

Highlights:

  • On three successive Mondays in February and March 2013, the drums were carried two at a time on the barge ZB 240 towed by the Edith Foss and assisted by the Pacific Queen.
  • Each coke drum is 100’ long x 28’ in diameter and weighs 500,000 pounds.
  • The new drums replace existing drums built in 1968. They will increase the
reliability of the coke drum operations and take advantage of more than 40 years
of industry advances in coke drum design.
  • Foss collaborated with Chevron, Mammoet USA and Fluor, a global engineering
construction company, to develop a complex and comprehensive transport safety
    matrix for the project.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to the continual improvement process were
key to the success of these operations. Innovation developed from the first landing was incorporated into the second and third landings, such as doubling the wooden crane mats, securing them with an anchoring system and lashing them
together to improve the rock piling fendering system.
