The Project:

Point Thomson in the Alaskan Arctic had previously been thought too remote to develop, but Foss was able to meet the logistical challenge and successfully complete two separate sealifts in support of a major oil exploration development project. While operating in extreme conditions of first year ice a meter thick, Foss safely pioneered a new route across the North Slope. For the first sealift, Foss delivered three tank modules. For the second, four tugs, including the Michele on her maiden voyage, towed four barges carrying seven oil field modules 2,300 miles to the Alaskan petroleum field. The modules supply fuel and are critical to the development and operation of the Alaskan North Slope project.

Services Provided:

  • Oil field development
  • Ocean towing
  • Project cargo and logistics

Highlights:

  • For the first lift Foss provided two barges, two ocean-going tugs, and two assist tugs, including the shallow draft tug Emmett Foss, making its first voyage after its construction at Foss Rainier Shipyard.
  • For the second lift four tugs, including the first of three Arctic Class tugs built at the Rainier yard, the Michele on her maiden voyage, towed four barges carrying seven oil field modules.
  • Successfully operating with only 6.5’ of draft at the delivery site.
  • The first three modules weighed more than 1,250 tons, and the second seven had an individual maximum module weight of 2,685 short tons.
  • Safely and on or ahead of schedule completed the voyage from Ulsan, South Korea 2,300 miles to the Alaskan petroleum field.

The Project:

Foss Maritime successfully delivered 155 Korean-built modules in support of the Kearl Oil Sands project near Fort McMurray, Alberta – one of Canada’s largest open-pit mining operations. The oversized modules were transported in 40 trips up the Columbia and Snake river system from Vancouver, WA to Pasco, WA and Lewiston, ID on barges retrofitted to operate in river conditions and travel in tandem. They were then transshipped to Canada to create the Kearl Sands state-of-the-art processing facility in the Athabasca Oil Sands region of northern Alberta.

Services Provided:

  • Harbor Towing
  • Project Cargo & Logistics
  • Ballasting & Mooring
  • Marine Engineering
  • Construction Support

Highlights:

  • Worked in partnership with Imperial Oil, ExxonMobil, Fluor, and Mammoet
  • ransported 155 pieces of production equipment sized up to 120’ by 24’ and 25’ high
  • Designed and fabricated ballasting systems for the barge Sitka; Upgraded and improved the system in barge 286-3
  • Provided ballasting in Lewiston, ID while modules were safely unloaded
  • Foss vessels the P.J. Brix tug pushed the barges while the Betsy L tug pulled the barges on a towline
  • The Kearl Sands project could eventually produce up to 345,000 barrels of oil per day
  • The complex and logistically challenging project was completed on time and ahead of schedule

The Project:

Since 1990, Foss has transported 30 million of tons of concentrated ore for Red Dog Mine – a zinc mine 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. We developed customized self-loading barges to transfer the ore to bulk carriers from the shallow-draft port. Working in harsh weather, we developed the world’s first and only roadstead loading of dry bulk cargo.

Services Provided:

  • Naval Architecture
  • Marine Engineering
  • Construction Support
  • Lighterage and Bulk Handling

Highlights:

  • Developed and built self-loading barges to pick up the ore stored in an 11-story-high building on shore
  • In 2009, Foss lightered 1.37 million tons of ore to 25 ships, and in 2010, the company lightered 1.40 million tons of ore to 27 ships. The record was set in 2007, when Foss lightered 1.46 million tons
  • Developed the world’s first open-roadstead loading of dry bulk cargo to enable loading, even in challenging weather, during the 90-100 day season
  • Navigate tugs through ice upon arrival at Red Dog in late June or early July. The tugs depart in October, before the port completely freezes over
  • The bulk carriers that carry the ore anchor in deep water during harsh weather conditions
