Foss Transports World’s Largest Railcar Barge

The Project:

Since 1993, Foss has safely guided the world’s largest railcar barge, the Aquatrain, for the Canadian National Railroad (CNR) between Prince Rupert, B.C., to Whittier, Alaska. Foss tugs, the Justine Foss and the Barbara Foss, tow the 100 by 400 foot barge on a 12-day cycle, 30 times a year, where it links with the Alaska Railroad for daily service to Anchorage and Fairbanks. The route is the shortest water route to Alaska by 600 miles, compared to southern ports. The CNR has offered this year-round service since 1962, with Foss assuming operations in 1993 with the purchase of Portland-based Brix Maritime.

Highlights:

Both the 116-foot long Justine Foss and Barbara Foss are rated at 4,300 horsepower.
The barge is 400’ by 100’ with a capacity of 45 rail cars.
The Aquatrain barge was built in 1982 by Shin-A shipbuilding in South Korea and is the world’s largest railcar barge.
Railcars can travel intact from origin to destination on one bill of lading.
The service has operated for more than 50 years.

Zadco Transport

The Project:

Foss Maritime’s ITB the Strong/Mariner transported two land-based self-moveable drill rigs measuring 11,022 cubic meters each, from Shanghai, China to a man made island 50 miles off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The shallow draft and RORO/LOLO capabilities of the vessel enabled direct delivery of the entire drill rig (per delivery) to the island. Foss provided project management including loading and discharging at the port with limited infrastructure. Foss’ ability to deliver directly to the island and to overcome the restrictive quay design eliminated the customer’s need to transship sensitive cargoes.

Highlights:

The multi-deck, shallow draft ITB Strong/Mariner’s design, which includes two side ramps, bow ramp, and a 50-ton-capacity crane on its starboard side, makes it ideal for conducting cargo operations in underdeveloped ports
Each land-based self-moveable rig consisted of a drill structure/mast, a power unit, and a mud unit module
Route included traversing known pirate zones, and vessel security was hired to protect the sensitive cargoes
Provided full logistical management including a capacity simulation tool for UZ750 Logistics team and proper packaging of cargoes for ocean transport

Sealift To The Alaskan Arctic

The Project:

Point Thomson in the Alaskan Arctic had previously been thought too remote to develop, but Foss was able to meet the logistical challenge and successfully complete two separate sealifts in support of a major oil exploration development project. While operating in extreme conditions of first year ice a meter thick, Foss safely pioneered a new route across the North Slope. For the first sealift, Foss delivered three tank modules. For the second, four tugs, including the Michele on her maiden voyage, towed four barges carrying seven oil field modules 2,300 miles to the Alaskan petroleum field. The modules supply fuel and are critical to the development and operation of the Alaskan North Slope project.

Highlights:

For the first lift Foss provided two barges, two ocean-going tugs, and two assist tugs, including the shallow draft tug Emmett Foss, making its first voyage after its construction at Foss Rainier Shipyard.
For the second lift four tugs, including the first of three Arctic Class tugs built at the Rainier yard, the Michele on her maiden voyage, towed four barges carrying seven oil field modules.
Successfully operating with only 6.5’ of draft at the delivery site.
The first three modules weighed more than 1,250 tons, and the second seven had an individual maximum module weight of 2,685 short tons.
Safely and on or ahead of schedule completed the voyage from Ulsan, South Korea 2,300 miles to the Alaskan petroleum field.

Delivering Crucial Aid

The Project:

Even before Hurricane Sandy had finished its devastating 2012 rampage, Foss Maritime had mobilized to provide disaster relief to affected parts of New York and New Jersey. Entering into a chaotic situation where communication was unreliable and roadways blocked, Foss quickly gathered relief supplies – pumps, generators and the personnel to operate them – from across the country. Foss remained on site for weeks after the super storm, working under the direction of the Defense Logistics Agency and FEMA to resolve flooded areas and provide power to the affected locations. The federal government’s DLA called upon Foss based on the company’s previous success delivering thousands of tons of food and assisting in the rebuilding of Haiti after an earthquake.

Highlights:

Delivered 26 pumps, 6 generators and personnel, all en route within hours of the call for help.
Partnered with the Defense Logistics Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, NJ.
Flooding relief and electrical service assistance for weeks after the super storm.
At a 2013 ceremony the Defense Logistics Agency honored Foss Maritime Company for its role in post-Hurricane Sandy relief work. Foss was recognized for its ability to quickly move personnel and equipment to devastated, hard-to-reach locations in
New York and the New Jersey shore.

CD5 Bridge Components Delivered

The Project:

Foss Maritime transported 11,000 tons of construction materials for the Conoco Philips – CD5 bridge project to build four bridges across the Colville River connecting Conoco’s Alpine Facility to a satellite operation in the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (NPRA). In voyages in August and November 2013, concrete deck panels and bridge girders were towed from Tacoma, WA to Valdez, AK and stored to await transit over the ice roads to the construction site by Foss’s sister company Carlile Transportation.

Highlights:

Worked in partnership with Carlile Transportation and ConocoPhillips to successfully deliver bridge components to a remote, arctic site.
In August 2013, the Ocean Pathfinder towed a 330’ x 86’ barge laden with 6,700 short tons of concrete deck panels and bridge girders from Tacoma to Valdez.
In November 2013, the Lauren Foss towed a similar barge laden with 4,500 short tons of bridge girders, construction materials and equipment.
Specially designed stanchions were engineered to assure proper stowage and sea fastening of roadway panels.

Massive Coke Drums Delivered

The Project:

Safely transported six huge coke drums from the Port of Los Angeles on an approximately 28-mile voyage to King Harbor in Redondo Beach for installation at Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery. Foss collaborated with heavy-lift company Mammoet USA, utilizing a detailed ballasting plan to keep the barge level during operations, which required the placement of ramps to load and unload. Self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) moved the cylinders from the barge moored at a levee in a yacht marina to a staging site near the final destination of the drums at the refinery.

Highlights:

On three successive Mondays in February and March 2013, the drums were carried two at a time on the barge ZB 240 towed by the Edith Foss and assisted by the Pacific Queen.
Each coke drum is 100’ long x 28’ in diameter and weighs 500,000 pounds.
The new drums replace existing drums built in 1968. They will increase the
reliability of the coke drum operations and take advantage of more than 40 years
of industry advances in coke drum design.
Foss collaborated with Chevron, Mammoet USA and Fluor, a global engineering
construction company, to develop a complex and comprehensive transport safety
matrix for the project.
Attention to detail and commitment to the continual improvement process were
key to the success of these operations. Innovation developed from the first landing was incorporated into the second and third landings, such as doubling the wooden crane mats, securing them with an anchoring system and lashing them
together to improve the rock piling fendering system.

Kearl Oil Sands Module Transport

The Project:

Foss Maritime successfully delivered 155 Korean-built modules in support of the Kearl Oil Sands project near Fort McMurray, Alberta – one of Canada’s largest open-pit mining operations. The oversized modules were transported in 40 trips up the Columbia and Snake river system from Vancouver, WA to Pasco, WA and Lewiston, ID on barges retrofitted to operate in river conditions and travel in tandem. They were then transshipped to Canada to create the Kearl Sands state-of-the-art processing facility in the Athabasca Oil Sands region of northern Alberta.

Alaskan Shipwreck Fuel Removal

The Project:

Assisted in heavy bunker fuel removal from the wreckage of the Princess Kathleen, which sank after grounding on Point Lena near Juneau, Alaska, in 1952. In order to mitigate potential environmental damage, Foss worked in conjunction with Global Diving & Salvage, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to extract over 300,000 gallons of bunker fuel and oily water from the wreck and transport it to a waste oil-recycling center. To secure the vessels on location, Foss designed and installed a four point mooring system aboard the barge.

The multi-purpose vessel, the Strong Mariner, transported sensitive cargo for a joint US-Australian military exercise conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).
